I TRIED TO FOCUS ON work and start a new project, but my mind kept going back to Nerea and our conversation.

Why the fuck had I told her all that stuff about me and my uncle’s school? How was I going to let her go in five years if she knew all that?

And that look in her eyes...

She’d been horrified and sad, and I had no idea why.

Why did she even ask me anything and pretend she cared?

Except, it hadn’t looked like she’d been pretending.

A knock sounded on the door, yanking me out of my thoughts.

“Come in,” I said.

Romano entered the room. “Clive is going to publish his article tomorrow. He claims you’re not letting Nerea out of your sight, and that she’s not allowed to go anywhere on her own.”

“What am I supposed to do with those ridiculous claims?”

“Send Nerea out with the guards. She can go shopping, or we can have some girl grab a coffee with her. I don’t think Clive will know if the girl is a friend or not. Even if he claims it’s all fake, I doubt many will believe him with actual proof showing otherwise, especially if you do this before the article goes live.”

I’d had it with Clive and his stupid articles.

“Fuck it. I’ll take Nerea out, and I don’t give a shit about that asshole,” I said.

“But—”

“No.”

“Should I let some reporters know where you’ll be going so that they can take photos?”

“No.”

I had no idea what Clive was up to, but if he thought he could rattle me or get in my way with some stupid articles and his CIA friend, he was wrong.
